Queen's National Scholars Program Overview

Queen's National Scholars (QNS) 2025-26 Program will have three positions available, with appointments starting July 1, 2026. Each QNS will be valued at $200,000 per annum for five years.

2025-26 Submission Deadlines

  • August 29, 2025: Submissions due from the Dean's Office to the Office of the Provost via vpaa@queensu.ca. Faculties may set their own internal deadlines for submission to the Dean's Office prior to this deadline.

Program Overview:

The objective of the QNS program will continue to be to attract candidates of the highest quality. The QNS will aim to bolster our impact in the areas of research and scholarship, and will be filled with established Associate Professor or Professor scholars who will provide research leadership. Attracting candidates who would add to the diversity and strength of the institution, develop partnerships within and external to their units, and align with institutional priorities continues to be an intrinsic objective of the QNS selection process. Candidates holding an existing tenured/tenure-track or continuing adjunct appointment at Queen's will not be considered.

Those appointed under the QNS program will have clearly demonstrated the following attributes:

  1. superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (considering the different practices in the relevant field or discipline) and will be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers;
  2. An outstanding and innovative world-class research program which has made a major impact in their field(s) and has been recognized internationally;
  3. An original, innovative research program of the highest quality, with evidence of collaborative and/or interdisciplinary scholarship
  4. Alignment with institutional and/or faculty priorities and/or existing or emerging areas of strength;
  5. A commitment to the principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility, which should be incorporated into their teaching, supervision, research and scholarship.

The QNS subject areas should clearly align with the existing or emerging research strengths at Queen's, ideally championed by a Research Group (cluster of scholars with synergistic interests), Centre or Institute. Interdisciplinary and cross-faculty positions are strongly encouraged. The research area should be open enough to attract a healthy pool of competitive applicants.

Selection Process

Stage One: For the first stage of the competition, the QNS Selection Committee will evaluate each proposal. Please note that there is no limit to the number of proposals that the Dean of a faculty/school may endorse. The number of proposals selected to advance will not exceed the number of QNS positions available, which this year is three.  Proposals should include clear recruitment plans that demonstrate an ability to attract a diverse pool of candidates.

Those interested in submitting a proposal are invited to attend one of the following information sessions:

July 11, 10:00-11:00am
Zoom Link

July 23 10:30-11:30am

Stage Two: The proposals selected to move to the second stage will follow the typical faculty recruitment process. The QNS Selection Committee will review the shortlist for each search, to ensure that the pool of candidates meets the appropriate criteria and is sufficiently diverse. Following candidate interviews, the recruitment will be subject to all regular approval processes, including Provost pre-approval prior to negotiations. Please note that only those candidates of exceptional merit will be recommended for QNS appointment; selection at the proposal stage and approval of the shortlist does not guarantee approval to hire the candidate as a QNS.
