Automatic Commerce Awards

The following awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.

Students currently registered at Queen's will be automatically considered for the following awards. Most of these awards are based on grades. You will be notified by either the Student Awards Office or your faculty if you have been selected for an automatic award. 

Eligible current students will also be considered for automatic awards open to all current students.


Harry Abramsky Scholarship

Given by Harry Abramsky, Kingston, Ontario. Awarded to a student entering the final year of the Undergraduate Program in Commerce, based on the standing obtained in the penultimate year of his or her program.

Arts/Commerce '44 Scholarship

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Arts and Science awards.

Beverly M. Blackwell Memorial Prize

Established in her memory by the family and friends of Beverly Marie Blackwell, Commerce '84, and awarded to a student entering the second year of the Commerce Program on the basis of academic proficiency and contribution to his or her year.

Diane Blake Memorial Book Prize

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Arts and Science awards.

Ronald M. Buttery Memorial Scholarship

Awarded each year to the student entering the third year of the Commerce program who has achieved the highest cumulative average in the compulsory courses in quantitative methods in the Smith School of Business.

Bill Cannon Scholarship

Established in September 2009 by Brian Martin, BCom 1999, to recognize the excellent faculty in the Commerce Program, and specifically to honour Professor William T. (Bill) Cannon.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in finance to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

Commerce '74 Award

Awarded annually by members of the graduating class to a classmate who has contributed significantly during the past four years in non-academic and non-athletic matters.

Joanne Secord Davidson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to the female student with the highest standing at the end of the second year of the Commerce program.

John Deere Foundation of Canada Scholarship in Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Commerce

Established in December 2003 by the John Deere Foundation of Canada and awarded on the basis of academic merit to a student entering the final year of the Mechanical Engineering program in Smith Engineering or to a student entering the final year of the Commerce program in the Smith School of Business. The award will be presented to a student in Mechanical Engineering in even-numbered years and to a student in Commerce in odd-numbered years.

Chancellor C. A. Dunning Scholarship in Commerce

Awarded annually for general proficiency to a candidate entering the third year of the Undergraduate Program in Commerce.

Ian R. Friendly Marketing Scholarship

Established in November 2015 by Carol and Ian Friendly, B.Com. 1983, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence in third year Marketing courses to students entering fourth year in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

Governor General's Silver Medal

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Arts and Science awards.

Canada Life Scholarship

Established in October 2006 and revised in October 2021 by The Canada Life Assurance Company. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee in the Smith School of Business. 

Elizabeth W. Hand Memorial Award in Smith School of Business

Established by friends of Elizabeth Warren Hand in her memory and in recognition of her concern for the growth and welfare of all students in the Smith School of Business at Queen's University. Awarded annually on the basis of general standing to a student entering the fourth year of the Undergraduate Program.

Richard J. Hand Commerce Award

Established by friends, family, alumni, and colleagues in memory of Richard J. Hand, dedicated professor and Dean of the School of Business, Vice Principal (Resources) at Queen's, and cherished colleague and friend. Awarded annually to a student graduating from the Commerce program in the Smith School of Business who exemplifies the values so closely held by Professor Hand: service to Queen's, leadership, humanity, and academic achievement at the highest level. Preference will be given to individuals who are continuing on to further studies.

Industrial Relations Prize

Awarded each year to the student with the highest standing in industrial relations.

Rick Jackson Scholarship

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Exchange and Bader College awards.

Thomas C. Kinnear Commerce '66 Award

Established in November 1987 and last revised in March 2018 by Thomas (Tom) Kinnear, BCom 1966. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the Marketing Research course or the Marketing Strategy course to students enrolled in a Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business who have exhibited leadership in extra-curricular activities, athletics, or student government. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee in the Smith School of Business.

Alice Gertrude King Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship established in memory of Alice Gertrude King, Bachelor of Commerce, 1949. Awarded annually by the Smith School of Business on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the third year of the Commerce program.

The Konrad Group Digital Innovation Scholarship

Established in January 2020 by Konrad Group and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in the Smith School of Business who have a strong focus in Management Information Systems. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

The Konrad Group Women in Technology Scholarship

Established in January 2020 by Konrad Group and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to female students graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in the Smith School of Business who have a strong focus in Management Information Systems. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

Honourable Ray Lawson Scholarship

Awarded annually to a student entering the third year of the Commerce program who has achieved high standing in each of the first two years of the program.

Reuben Wells Leonard Scholarship

Two awards are made as follows: 1. one scholarship to be awarded annually at the end of the penultimate year to the student standing highest in the Undergraduate Program in Commerce; 2. one scholarship to be awarded annually at the end of the penultimate year to the student standing second-highest in the Undergraduate Program in Commerce.

W. G. Leonard Award

Awarded annually to the graduating student or student entering fourth year who attains the highest aggregate mark in the undergraduate course in taxation.

Thomas A. Marshall Scholarship

Established in April 1991 and last revised in January 2017 under the terms of the will of Thomas A. Marshall, B.Com. 1926. Awarded to a student in third or fourth year in the Bachelor of Commerce Program in the Smith School of Business who has demonstrated academic excellence, with preference given to courses in Management Accounting. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

David R. McDougall Memorial Scholarship

A Scholarship in memory of the late David R. McDougall, a student in the School of Business, who, by his strength of character and warmth of personality, endeared himself to both faculty and students. The Scholarship will be awarded to a student entering the final year of the Bachelor of Commerce program, who has completed at least one optional course in each of marketing and industrial relations, and whose work in these courses and in the compulsory courses in marketing, industrial relations, and human behaviour has been outstanding. In so far as possible, the award will be granted to a student who exemplifies those personal qualities indicated above and who has contributed to the cultural life of Queen's University.

D. I. McLeod Dean's List Scholarship

Established in 2003, and revised in September 2016, to recognize the academic accomplishments of Bachelor of Commerce students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who have satisfied the eligibility criteria for achieving Dean's Honour List standing as defined by the Smith School of Business.

D. I. McLeod Dean's List with Distinction Scholarship

Established in 2003 and revised in September 2016 to recognize the academic accomplishments of Bachelor of Commerce students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who have satisfied the eligibility criteria for achieving Dean's Honour List standing as defined by the Smith School of Business, and who represent the top ten percent of their class.

Thomas and Elizabeth Miller Exchange Scholarship

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Exchange and Bader College awards.

D. D. Monieson Undergraduate Scholarship

Established in honour of Professor Emeritus D.D. Monieson to encourage the development of academic breadth and liberalism in the education of Commerce students at Queen's University. Awarded to a graduating student who combines high academic standing with significant achievement in the liberal, fine, or performing arts (excluding languages). Selection will be made by the Chair of the Undergraduate Program in consultation with the undergraduate awards committee.

Edward and Nancy Nash Scholarship

Established in October 2012 by Edward (Ted) Nash, BCom 1985. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the field of management science and decision analysis, and specifically the application of quantitative methods to business cases for the purpose of improving the reliability of decisions, to students entering fourth year in the Bachelor of Commerce program. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business based on the candidate's performance in four courses in the field of management science and decision analysis.

Ross W. Nicol Memorial Graduating Prize

Established by his family, friends, and classmates in memory of Ross W. Nicol, Commerce '75. Awarded annually to a graduating student on the basis of academic distinction, with particular emphasis in finance.

Ross W. Nicol Memorial Scholarship

Established by his family, friends, and classmates in memory of Ross W. Nicol, Commerce '75. Awarded annually to a student entering fourth year on the basis of academic distinction with particular emphasis in Finance.

Kris Nowers, B.Comm '78, Excellence in Finance Scholarship

Established in May 2001 by family and friends in memory of Kris Nowers, B.Com. '78, and awarded to a full-time student entering fourth year of the Commerce program on the basis of academic excellence and a demonstrated interest and aptitude in the area of finance.

W. H. Poole Scholarship in Marketing

Established by students and associates as an expression of gratitude and affection on the occasion of the retirement of Professor Emeritus, W.H. Poole, B.A., M.A., an enthusiastic student and accomplished scholar in marketing research. Awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who has the highest standing in the aggregate of three marketing courses completed by the end of the third year, one of which must be the course in marketing research.

R. G. H. Smails Prize

A gift of Commerce graduates on the occasion of the late Professor Smails' retirement. Awarded annually to the member of the graduating class in Commerce who receives the Medal in Commerce.

Christine Smith Award

Established in March 2007 in honour of Christine (Smith) Sinclair, B.Com. 1981, by members of the class of Commerce 1981 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated initiative and contribution to the Commerce program as well as academic achievement to an upper-year student in the Bachelor of Commerce program.

Richard G. Stackhouse/PwC Award

Established by PwC in honour of Richard G. Stackhouse, FCA, B.Com. '53, Managing Partner of the Toronto office of Price Waterhouse from 1985 to 1990. Awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who is majoring in the accounting area and who has taken the optional courses in accounting in the third year of the Commerce program. The award will be made on the basis of overall contribution to the Commerce program through academic excellence and extra-curricular involvement.

Sutton Scholarship for Higher Education

Established in February 2006 and revised in January 2009 by Gerry Sutton and Margaret Sutton and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to graduating students in the Commerce Program in the Smith School of Business to encourage additional post-secondary education. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

The Warmbold Award

Established in October 2011 and revised in May 2014 by Benita M. Warmbold, B.Com. 1980, and Gerald N. Wood. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, proven leadership skills, and involvement in school or community activities to a female student entering third year of the Bachelor of Commerce Program in the Smith School of Business who has chosen to concentrate her studies in the area of Finance. The award is renewable for the fourth year provided the student maintains a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the subsequent year, and involvement in leadership and community activities remains evident. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.
