Automatic Arts & Science Awards

The following awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.

Students who are currently registered at Queen's University will be automatically considered for the following awards. Most of these awards are based on grades. You will be notified by either Financial Aid and Awards or your faculty if you have been selected for an automatic award.

Eligible current students will also be considered for automatic awards open to all current students.

Gordon and Myrtle Adams Scholarships

Established by John Gordon Adams, 15 awards shall be presented annually to outstanding students who have completed the first two years of a B.A. (Honours) degree program.

Alumni Advisory Committee Scholarship

Established in October 1956 by Queen’s University with funds raised by alumni from the Classes of Arts 1939, 1940, 1941, and Science 1939, 1940, 1942, and 1943, as well as a transfer of funds from the 1953 Alumni Fund. Last revised in January 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Arts/Commerce '44 Scholarship

Established by members of the class of Arts/Commerce '44 on the occasion of their 50th reunion in grateful recognition of the life-long value of their Queen's experience. To be awarded by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Smith School of Business in alternate years to a student who is of high academic standing entering either third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Commerce program, and who does not hold an award of equal or greater value from Queen's University

Diana Blake Memorial Book Prize

A memorial book prize established by the Alumni and Alumnae Associations of Queen's in memory of the late Diana Blake, who was Assistant Chief Librarian at Queen's and Vice-President of the Alumni Association at the time of her death in February, 1975. To be awarded upon graduation to a student in the faculty of Arts and Science, Smith Engineering or the Smith School of Business, who has attained at least second class standing and who has made a significant contribution to campus life.

Robert Bruce Scholarship

In the Faculty of Arts and Science two scholarships are awarded at the end of the first year to the students who have achieved the highest and second highest standing in the regular examinations of that year. The scholarships are renewable in the third and fourth years provided that the recipients are registered as full time in the Faculty of Arts and Science and that satisfactory standing is maintained.

Phyllis M. Camm Memorial Scholarship

Established in December 1971 and last revised in May 2020 by relatives and friends in memory of Phyllis Marion (Hough) Camm, BA (Honours) 1944. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with a major or medial plan in English. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Dean's Special Awards in the Faculty of Arts and Science

Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Hugh Evans Physics Scholarship

Established in October 2019 by the Estate of Hugh Carlyle Evans, BSc 1955, MSc 1957. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students in second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in Physics offered by the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Eliza Fitzgerald Prize

Given in acknowledgment of the contribution made to secondary school education in Ontario by Miss Eliza Fitzgerald, Arts 1884, one of the first women graduates of Queen's University. Awarded to the woman student who is deemed to have the highest overall standing at the end of their second year.

Governor General's Silver Medal

Established in 1873 by Lord Dufferin, Canada's Third Governor General after Confederation, the Governor General's Silver Medal is awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the graduating students with the highest academic standing in an Honours Bachelor's degree.  Two medals will be granted each year as follows: one medal will be granted to a student graduating with an academic plan in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, or Commerce; one medal will be granted to a student graduating with an academic plan in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Health Sciences.

Incoming Study Abroad Award

Established in January 2017 by the Faculty of Arts and Science. Awarded on the basis of admission to students from Queen's partner universities who are entering either a one- or two-term study abroad program in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University.

R. W Leonard Penultimate Year Scholarships

The awards are made as follows: 1. two scholarships are awarded annually at the end of the third year to the students who have made the highest standing throughout the first three years in each of the honours B.A. and honours B.Sc. programs; 2. two scholarships are awarded annually at the end of the third year to the students who have made the second-highest standing throughout the first three years in each of the honours B.A. and honours B.Sc. programs.

Liu Shiming Scholarship 

Established in February 2023 by Liu Shiming Art Foundation. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Art in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Geneva Misener Scholarship in Social Sciences

Established by Dr. Geneva Misener, M.A. 1899, and awarded annually to the female student with the highest standing for work completed in the third year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program concentrating in the social sciences.

John and Elizabeth Murray Scholarships

Established in April 2006 and revised in February 2018 by John Murray, B.Sc. 1963, Ph.D. 1967, and Elizabeth Murray.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science, who do not hold other scholarships of higher value offered by Queen's University for that academic year. Preference will be given to students in a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Queen's Appeal Undergraduate Scholarship

Sixteen scholarships are funded by contributions to the Queen's Appeal Campaign, 1984-1989. Awarded on the recommendation of the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science to students with high academic standing who have completed one or more years in the Faculty of Arts and Science and are entering second, third, or fourth years of the Faculty.

James H. Rattray Scholarships in Science

Established by Major James H. Rattray, M. C. Awarded annually to students entering the second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) program who do not hold other awards of higher value.

Helen McLeod Reeve Scholarship

Established by Mr. D.I. McLeod of Toronto, who was a graduate of Arts 1908 and for many years a member of the Board of Trustees of Queen's University. Awarded to the woman student entering fourth year in the Faculty of Arts and Science who is deemed to have the highest standing in the work of the preceding year.

George R. Robertson Scholarship

Established in October 2020 by the Estate of Mary Elizabeth Robertson, BA (Hons) 1949 in memory of her late husband, George R. Robertson, BA (Hons.) 1950. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in Geology, including Environmental Geology, in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

The John Stark Gillies Scholarship 

Established in November 1969 by the Estate of Margaret I. R. Gillies in memory of her late husband, John Stark Gillies, and last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of any undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Harry S. Southam Scholarship

Established in May 2009 by the estate of Janet Southam MacTavish Ritchie in memory of her father Harry S. Southam, LL.D. 1948. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a B.Sc. (Hons.) program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Mark R. Wilson Awards

The Mark R. Wilson Award is the highest tribute the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society may pay to an Arts and Science student for valuable and distinguished service to the University in non-athletic extra-curricular activities. Formerly the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society Award, the award was renamed to honour Mark R. Wilson, ArtSci 1999, who was tragically killed in July 1998. Mark was a remarkable student who contributed extensively to Queen's via his involvement in ASUS. The recipient of this award is presented with a plaque at the Society Annual General Meeting. 

Curtis Memorial Foundation Prize

Founded in memory of the late J.T. Curtis of Ottawa. Awarded to the part-time student graduating with the second-highest grade point average.

H. W. Curran Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association to honour Dr. H.W. Curran, the Director of University Extension from 1952 until 1970, and the Director of the Summer School from 1953 until 1970. Awarded each year in October to the undergraduate student registered for the first time in the summer term in a degree program who obtains the highest grade in a degree-credit course.

Kathleen L. Healey Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association in grateful recognition of the friendly counsel given so generously to extension and summer students by Miss Kathleen L. Healey, the Permanent Secretary Treasurer of the Queen's Summer School Association and the Assistant Director of University Extension from 1943 until 1970. Awarded in October to a part-time student graduating with the highest grade point average.

J. Carl King Scholarship

Established by J. Carl King, B.A.(Hons.) 1944 and awarded each year in October on the basis of academic excellence to a part-time student or students in a Humanities program (with preference to a student majoring in English) who has completed at least 60 units.

W. T MacClement Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association in memory of Dr. W.T. MacClement, the first Director of the Summer School. Four prizes are awarded in October to the undergraduate students achieving the highest grades in a humanities or social science course taken in the Summer term (with preference to a student in a history, philosophy, geography, or psychology course).

Matheson Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association. This prize is in honour of the late Dean John Matheson who was at one time supervisor of extension work. He also was from 1939 until 1943 Director of the Summer School. Throughout his career he was an ardent believer in extension courses and was a friend and counsellor of many generations of students. Awarded in October to the undergraduate student achieving the highest grade in a social science course taken in the summer term (with preference to a student in an economics course).

McNeil Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association to honour the late Dr. W.E. McNeil, former Vice-Principal and Treasurer of Queen's University, a wise friend and counsellor to Summer School executives. Awarded in October to the undergraduate student achieving the highest grade in a humanities course taken in the summer term (with preference to a student in an English course).

Tracy Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association to honour H.L. Tracy, former Director of the Summer School, Queen's University. Awarded in October to the undergraduate student achieving the second-highest grade in a humanities course taken in the summer term (with preference to a student in an English course).

Wallace Prize

Founded by the Queen's University Summer School Association in honour of the late Dr. Robert C. Wallace, Principal of Queen's University from 1936 to 1951. Awarded in October to the undergraduate student achieving the highest grade in a humanities course taken in the summer term (with preference to a student in a religious studies course).

Alfred Bader Scholarship in Art History

Established in November 1983 by A.R. Bader (Science '45), PhD (Harvard) and last revised in October 2019. Awarded to students with the highest standing in a plan in Art History who are entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree.  Awarded to students who have completed or are enrolled in at least two courses in Baroque Art as part of their degree program with particular emphasis on Northern Baroque painting.

Janet Braide Book Prize in Art History

Established in memory of Janet Braide, Canadian art historian and author. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department to a student achieving high standing in the final year of an Art History Honours concentration, who has also some record of service in the visual arts, either within the University or to the community at large.

Suzan Major Memorial Scholarship

Established in October 2019 by Jack and Helene Major in memory of their daughter Suzan Major, BA (Hons.) 1983. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan in Art History.

Wallace Near Prize in Art History

Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq., of Toronto. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department at the end of the second year to a student achieving the highest standing in courses in art history in the first and second years.

Milada Svaton Neumann Award

Established by a gift from John Churchill Clark in memory of Milada Svaton Neumann, respected international collector of art. Awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Art History in the third year of a B.A.(Honours) program in the Department of Art.

Frances K. Smith Scholarship in Art History

Established in October 2003 by Frances K. Smith (BA 1956) and family. Mrs. Smith is passionate about the arts, and has been a supporter of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in Art History offered by the Department of Art History and Art Conservation. Preference will be given to a student who has completed or is currently completing at least two courses in Canadian Art as part of their degree program. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Craine Professor Scholarship

Established in March 2009 and revised in May 2016 by Glenville Jones, Craine Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, to recognize student achievement in the undergraduate Biochemistry program. Awarded to one graduating student in Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a Subject of Specialization in Biochemistry and one graduating student in Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a Major in Biochemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Science who have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence.

DBMS Undergraduate Research Prizes

Established in November 2014 by the Associate Dean of Life Sciences and Biochemistry. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Life Sciences or Biochemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Awarded to students who obtain the highest standing in fourth year discipline specific research projects. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science upon the recommendation of the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences.

Society of Chemical Industry Student Merit Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Engineering and Applied Science, Chemical Engineering and Engineering Chemistry awards.

David T. Canvin Scholarship in Biology

Established in November 2001 by friends and colleagues in honour of David T. Canvin (BSA, MSc (Manitoba), PhD (Purdue)), on the occasion of his retirement. Dr. Canvin joined the Department of Biology in 1965 and served as Department Head from 1980-84 and Dean of Graduate Studies from 1984-89. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Biology. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

William I. Chisholm Scholarship in Biology

Established in 1955 by the Estate of Regina Chisholm, in memory of William I. Chisholm and last revised in May 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Biology Department. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Helen Arliss Denyes Scholarships

Established by Bessie G. Vair in memory of her daughter, Helen Arliss Denyes, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students, preferably women, entering the final year of a Biology program.

Gowan Foundation Scholarship

Established between 1880-1890 by Sir James Gowan, KCMG and last revised in March 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year in the following degree programs on a rotating basis:  1) Bachelor of Science (Honours) with an academic plan in Biology; 2) Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with an academic plan in Political Studies; 3) JD or combined JD degree program. Selection will be made by the Arts and Science Awards Committee and the Awards Committee in the Faculty of Law as applicable.

Karen Huntley Memorial Award

Established by family and friends in memory of Karen Huntley, an undergraduate student in Biology who died in May 1990. Awarded to a student in an Honours Biology or an Environmental Science SSP Biology degree program who will be doing a field course or field research at Queen's University Biology Station or at another site in conservation, environmental biology, or sustainable forestry. This award will support expenses incurred at the field site. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee based upon nomination from the Department of Biology.

Arthur Louden Scholarship in Biology

Established by the late Frances Drover Louden in memory of her husband Arthur Louden, B.A. (Hon.) '30. Two scholarships awarded to the students entering the fourth year of a BSCH Major or BSCH SSP in Biology, who have achieved the highest and second-highest overall academic standing but do not have an award of higher value.

W. T MacClement Memorial Prize

Given by graduates in memory of William Thomas MacClement, formerly the John Roberts Allan Professor of Biology at Queen's University at Kingston. Awarded annually to the first-year student making the second-highest standing in either BIOL 101 or 200.

Fran and Tom McClung Scholarship in Biology

Founded by Fran and Tom McClung in recognition of academic excellence. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department to an outstanding student entering the fourth year of a B.Sc. Honours program in Biology.

Alexander and Cora Munn Summer Research Award

Established in April 2001 by Alexander Munn, B.A. 1942 (History and Economics), and Cora Munn, B.A. 1972 (French and English), to support students of Conservation Biology in full-time summer positions in a research environment at the Queen's University Biological Station. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to students in year three or four in an Honours program in Biology, who aspire to pursue studies in conservation biology and environmental preservation. Preference will be given to students with an interest in woodlot and wildlife conservation. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee based on the recommendation from the Department of Biology.

Wallace Near Prize in Biology

Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq., of Toronto. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department to a student entering the third year of an honours program with a concentration in Biology, who has completed at least three biology courses.

Queen's China Alumni Scholarship

Established in January 2017 by Queen's alumni and friends of China and revised in March 2022. Awarded in the Fall on the basis of academic excellence to Chinese international students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science with an academic plan in Biology or Environmental Science. Preference will be given to students who have completed, or will be doing, a field course or field research at Queen's University Biological Station. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee based upon nomination from the Department of Biology.

Mary McGregor Walker Scholarship

Established in May 2015 by James O. Walker in memory of his wife, Mary. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering third year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biology in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Alfred Bader Scholarship in Chemistry

Established in 1959 by Alfred R. Bader, Science 1945, PhD (Harvard), and last revised in October 2019.  Awarded to students with the highest standing in third year courses in organic chemistry offered by the Department of Chemistry.  Awarded to students entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree or Bachelor of Applied Science degree.

Dr. Erwin Buncel Scholarship in Chemistry

Established in September 2008 by Dr. Erwin Buncel, a distinguished professor of organic chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at Queen’s University since 1962, in memory of Ignacz, Irena, and Marta Buncel. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Chemistry, or a Bachelor of Applied Science degree program with an academic plan in Engineering Chemistry. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Canadian Society for Chemistry Award

Given by the Canadian Society for Chemistry and awarded on the recommendation of the Chemistry Department to the student with the highest standing on the work of the third year in a program leading to an Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Richard M. Dale Scholarship

Established by the family, friends, and his former instructors in honour of Richard M. Dale, a distinguished graduate of Queen's University and an outstanding scholar until his death in 1982. Awarded annually to the student entering second year in a program offered by the Departments of Physics or Chemistry with the highest combined standing in PHYS 104 and CHEM 112.

Eleanor Rowley Ingraham Scholarship in Chemistry

Established in January 2016 by Eleanor Rowley Ingraham, B.Sc. (Hons) 1944, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Solomon Lieff Scholarship in Chemistry

Established in 1946 in memory of the late Solomon Lieff, Arts 1946, by Mr. and Mrs. I. Lieff, Montreal, and the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation of Queen's University and revised in November 2021.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Chemistry. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Arthur Louden Scholarship in Chemistry

Established by the late Frances Drover Louden in memory of her husband Arthur Louden, B.A. (Hon.) '30. Awarded to a student entering the third year of the B.Sc. program with a concentration in Chemistry based on the subjects of the concentration taken in the first and second years of the program, who does not have an award of higher value.

R. T Mohan Undergraduate Scholarships in Chemistry

The terms for this award are cross listed with automatic Engineering and Applied Science, Chemistry awards.

Robert Y. Moir Scholarship

Established in April 1999 by family, friends, and former students as a memorial to Professor Robert Y. Moir, a dedicated teacher of Chemistry for over 40 years. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Chemistry. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Susan Near Prize in Chemistry

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Two prizes to be awarded, one to the student in Arts and Science with the highest standing in CHEM 397, and one to the student in Applied Science with the highest standing in CHEM 398* or 399*, provided that the mark obtained in each case is at least 80 per cent.

Dr. William H. Nichols Prize in Analytical Chemistry

Founded by Mr. C. Walter Nichols in memory of his father, Dr. William H. Nichols. Awarded annually to a student in the Faculty of Arts and Science or in Smith Engineering who has attained the highest standing in CHEM 213*.

Dr. William H. Nichols in Chemistry 112

Founded by Mr. C. Walter Nichols in memory of his father, Dr. William H. Nichols. Awarded annually to a student attaining high standing in CHEM 112.

W. MacFarlane Smith Scholarship in Chemistry

Established in March 1981 by friends of Walter MacFarlane Smith in recognition of his many contributions to Queen's University. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest standing in CHEM 112. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Walter MacFarlane Smith Scholarship

Established in March 1994 by family, friends, and former students as a memorial to Professor Walter MacFarlane Smith. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Chemistry. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

M. Sullivan and Son Limited Scholarship

Established in December 2005 by the Sullivan family and awarded to a graduating student in Chemical Engineering or Engineering Chemistry in Smith Engineering or Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Science on the basis of outstanding achievement for a research project in Chemistry. Selection will be made by the Departmental Awards Committee and approved by the Awards Committee of Smith Engineering and the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Society of Chemical Industry Student Merit Award

Flossie May Bogart Scholarship

Established in 1937 by the Executors of the Estate of Dr. Katherine Wells Bogart in memory of Flossie May Bogart and last revised in May 2020. Awarded to the student who achieves the highest standing in a second, third, or fourth year course in Greek who is enrolled in any undergraduate degree program. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

The J. Herbert Cameron Scholarship in Classics

Established in February 1980 by the late Edith Cameron (BA 1915) in memory of her husband, J. Herbert Cameron (BA 1913, MA 1917), gold medalist in Greek and in Latin. Last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Classics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Barbara Escott and John LeRoy Memorial Scholarships

Established by friends and family in memory of Barbara Escott and John LeRoy. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a full-time student in second, third, or fourth year of a B.A.(Honours) program in English or Classical Studies. Awarded to a student in English in even years and to a student in Classical Studies in odd years.

Anna May MacIntyre Scholarship

Established by the late Anna May MacIntyre, B.A. '29. Awarded annually to the student who at the end of the second year has attained the highest standing in not less than two Latin courses. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must have first-class standing and continue to be registered in a Latin concentration in the Department of Classics. Founded by the late Andrew McCulloch, M.A., of Thorold, and awarded as a prize for the student who has attained the highest standing in LATN 110.

Frederica McCulloch Scholarship

Founded by the late Andrew McCulloch, M.A., of Thorold, and awarded as a scholarship normally at the end of the second year on the standing attained thus far in two or more Latin courses.

Wallace Near Prizes in Classics

Founded by the late W. W. Near, Esq., of Toronto, and awarded to: 1. the student who has the highest standing in CLST 101; 2. the student who has the highest standing in CLST 129; 3. the student who has the highest standing in Greek or Latin, normally at the end of the third year of a B.A. (Honors) program.

Marc D. Rigby Scholarships in Classical Studies

Established in July 2011 by the estate of Marc D. Rigby, B.Sc.(Eng.) 1992, B.A. (Hons.) Classical Studies 1997. Two scholarships to be awarded annually by the Department of Classics on the basis of academic excellence to students who have taken Classics courses. One prize is for a student entering year 2, 3, or 4 in any concentration of Classical Studies (Latin, Greek or Classical Studies), and the other is for a student not registered in a Bachelor of Arts program who has taken a 2nd or 3rd year course in Latin, Greek, or Classical Studies.

Mary E. Staples Award

Established by her son, John Malcolm, Arts 1953, in memory of Mary E. Staples, Arts 1914. Awarded annually, at the discretion of the Classics Department, to a student who has done first class work in Vergil and/or Horace.

Herman Tracy Book Prize in Classics

Established in honour of Herman L. Tracy, B.A., Ph.D., former head of the Department of Classics: a book prize to be awarded to a graduating student with the highest standing in the Department of Classics.

John D. B Walton, Arts '45 Scholarship

Established by John D.B. Walton, Arts '45, and awarded to a student in a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program with a concentration in Greek or Latin, who has achieved the highest standing at the end of his or her third year and who has successfully completed a minimum of two classical language courses, one at the 200 level, and one at the 300 level, or both at the 300 level.

Doug Bellinger Scholarship in Biomedical Computing

Established by Doug Bellinger, B.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) 1988. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering fourth year with a subject of specialization in Biomedical Computing in the School of Computing. Selection will be made by the School of Computing.

EMS Technologies Scholarship

Established by E.M.S. Technologies Inc. and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a third-year student registered in the School of Computing in a Software Design subject of specialization degree program. The recipient may be offered a summer job with E.M.S. Technologies Inc.; acceptance of the job is not a condition of this scholarship. Selection will be made by the School of Computing.

Queen’s School of Computing 50th Anniversary Award

Established in January 2020 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Queen's School of Computing and in memory of all members who have served the School. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership in community service to students in third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Computing degree program. Applicants should submit a letter of application, and a resume to the Faculty of Arts and Science by 30 March. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

George Thomas Warren Scholarship in Computing Science

Established in October 2000 by Mrs. Evelyn Warren, in memory of her husband, George Thomas Warren, B.Sc.(Eng.) 1938.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to full-time students entering second year of the Computer Engineering program in Smith Engineering.

William Angus Award in Drama

Presented to the student who, in the opinion of the Director of the Dan School of Drama and Music, has made the most significant contribution during the year to Drama at Queen's. This award is the gift of the Faculty Players and the Dan School of Drama and Music and is offered annually by the Dan School in honour of Dr. William Angus, mentor and guiding spirit of the Drama Guild from 1938-1963.

Dan School of Drama and Music Production Award

Established in October 2002 by the Department of Drama and awarded to a student or students deemed by the Dan School of Drama and Music to have made an outstanding contribution to the design and production activities of the Dan School.

Edythe Zacks Millman Prize in the Performing Arts

Established by Edythe Zacks Millman, B.A. 1939, who was a member of the Drama Guild, the Kingston Drama Group and various other theatrical organizations. Edythe had a great love of musical comedies and was active in the world of theatre through her participation in the local communities in Kingston and Naples, Florida. Awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a graduating student in a Drama program for extraordinary achievement in the area of performance.

Susan Near Prize in Drama

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Awarded by recommendation of the Department on the work done in drama courses during the second year.

Herbert and Stella Overton Award in Drama

Established in May 1996 and last revised in October 2019 by their daughter, Isabel Bader, LLD 2007. Awarded on the basis of outstanding achievement in non-major Dan School theatrical productions to students entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with a plan offered by the Dan School of Drama and Music.

Rod Robertson Prize in Dramatic Literature and Theatre History

Awarded to the graduating student in a Drama program who has achieved the highest average in the equivalent of four full courses. For application details, including requisite courses, please consult the Dan School of Drama and Music.

J. C. W. Saxton Prize in Playwriting

Established in memory of John Saxton, actor, writer, teacher, and Faculty member of the Department of Drama, 1965-1969. Awarded annually to the student who is judged by the Dan School of Drama and Music to have submitted the best play. Details of the competition are published annually in the fall, and are available on request from the Dan School of Drama and Music.

I. Arthur Schneiderman (Arts 1937) Scholarship

Established in January 2008 from the estate of I. Arthur Schneiderman, Arts 1937, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third year in the Faculty of Arts and Science, with preference to a student in an honours program in Economics.

James Bocking Prize in Economics

Established by friends and colleagues in memory of James Bocking, B.A. (Hon.) 1969, M.A. 1972, and awarded to the student with the highest standing in ECON 445*, Industrial Organization and Public Policy.

Chancellor C. A. Dunning Prizes in Economics

Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics to the departmental medalist and to the student who has written the best B.A. Honours thesis in economics. If the Awards Committee of the Department of Economics deems that there is no suitable candidate for the best B.A. Honours thesis, then the full value of the prize will be awarded to the departmental medalist.

Professor F. A. Knox Prize

Established by the associates and students of Professor F.A. Knox, a master of the art of teaching, who taught in the Department of Economics of Queen's University from 1924 to 1965. Awarded to the student with the highest standing in either ECON 331* or 332*.

W. M. O. Lochead Scholarship in Economics

Established by William M. O. Lochead, MA 1898, and last revised in October 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

George and Mary Louise Patton Memorial Scholarship

Founded by the late George Patton in memory of his wife, Mary Louise Patton, and himself. Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics on the basis of the work in the second year to a student who records the intention to take an honours B.A. with a concentration in Economics or Applied Economics. To be eligible, a student must be registered in a least five courses in economics in his or her first three years.

Douglas D. Purvis Prize in Economics

Established by the family, friends, and colleagues of Professor D. Purvis in memory of his outstanding contributions to Canadian economics, to Queen's, and to the Department of Economics. Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Economics to the graduating student who has written the best fourth-year research paper in Economics (ECON 480* or ECON 499*).

Schraven Brothers Scholarship

Established in April 2008 by Tobias Schraven, B.A. (Hons) 2000, M.A. 2001, and David Schraven, B.A. (Hons) 2004. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement in courses in econometrics, financial economics, and/or game theory to international students who are registered in, or graduating from a B.A. (Honours) program with a major in either Economics or Applied Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Department of Economics with final approval by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee.

M. C. Urquhart Book Prize in Economics

Established by former students and colleagues of M.C. Urquhart, a distinguished professor in the Department of Economics for more than three decades. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students who have completed 6.0 credits of first-year Economics courses.

Edith Whyte Memorial Scholarship 

Established in October 1982 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Edith M. Whyte (BA 1948) who at the time of her death in 1980 was the highest-ranking woman at the Bank of Canada. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Edith Whyte Memorial Scholarship in Economics

Established in October 1982 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Edith M. Whyte (BA 1948) who at the time of her death in 1980 was the highest-ranking woman at the Bank of Canada. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest standing entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Economics. Don Wood Undergraduate Scholarship in Economics

Established in April 2006 by David Dodge, B.A.(Hon.) 1965, LL.D. 2002 and Christiane Dodge, B.A.(Hon.) 1965, in honour of the late Don Wood, M.A. 1953, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to one or more full-time students entering the second, third, or fourth year of a B.A. (Honours) program with a Major in Economics, a Major in Applied Economics, or a Medial in Economics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Department of Economics

Established in 1902 by the Class of 1901 and last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of English Language and Literature. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Arts 1915 Scholarship

Established in 1923 as a memorial by the Class of Arts 1915 and last revised in January 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. Awarded annually on a rotating basis to students with an academic plan in English, History, or Math. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

The John W. Bell and Janet S. Bell Memorial Scholarship 

Established in June 2008 by the Estate of John Wycliffe Hamilton Bell (PhD 1972) in memory of his parents, John W. Bell and Janet S. Bell. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in a course or courses emphasizing 20th Century English Literature to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of English Language and Literature. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Helen Richards Campbell Memorial Scholarship in Creative Writing

Established by the Campbell Family in memory of Helen Richards Campbell, who graduated from Queen's in 1978 at the age of 81. Awarded to the student with the highest standing in any creative writing course (CWRI) at the 200 level.

James Cappon Memorial Scholarship in English

Established in May 1940 by Miss Alice Macnee, in memory of Dr. James Cappon, MA, LLD 1921, formerly Head of the Department of English and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Last revised in May 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of English. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

G. Joseph Cooper Scholarship

Established in February 1997 by G. Joseph Cooper, B.Ed. 1972, in memory of this mother, Molly Cooper and last revised in January 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering third year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of English. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Barbara Crook Scholarship in English

Established in November 2015 and revised in May 2018 in honour of Barbara Crook, Artsci '79, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in English in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Ruth E. Crummy Scholarship

Established in January 1982 by Alan C. Harrop and last revised in January 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of English. Robert William Cumberland Scholarship in English

Awarded annually to a student entering the third or fourth year of a program with a concentration in English who has achieved high academic standing in English courses emphasizing one or more of the following fields of study: language, literature, or literary criticism.

Fulton Memorial Prize

Established by family and friends in memory of R. Donald Fulton, B.A. '43, Lyllis MacMillan Fulton and R. Derry Fulton, B.A. '72. Awarded annually to a student whose love of poetry and sensitivity to poetic language is demonstrated in a poem or an essay on poetry submitted in an English course. Submissions will be nominated by faculty members of the Department of English.

Wilhelmina Gordon Foundation Scholarship in English

Established by the Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire, in appreciation of the work of Professor Wilhelmina Gordon who served as National Education Secretary from 1923 to 1937. Awarded to the Canadian student who qualifies for a first-class honours BA with a concentration in English and ranks first in the graduating group in English at Queen's University. The student must be proceeding to graduate work.

Anna C. Hayward Prize in Canadian Studies

Established by the family of Anna C. Hayward and awarded to the top graduating student in the Canadian Studies Special Field.

George Forrest Johnston Memorial Scholarship

Provision for this scholarship was made in the will of George Forrest Johnston, B.A. '69. Awarded to a student entering the second year of a major concentration in English who has achieved high academic standing in the work of the first year and first-class standing in English. Preference will be given to students who are graduates of Howe Sound Secondary School, Squamish, British Columbia.

J. Carl King Scholarship

Alexander Laird Scholarship in English 

Established in 1919 in memory of the late Reverend Alexander Laird by his brothers and sisters and last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students in any Faculty or School with the highest standing in ENGL 100. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Fran and Tom McClung Scholarship in English

Founded by Fran and Tom McClung in recognition of academic excellence. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department to a student entering the third or fourth year of an honours B.A. program in English, who has achieved high academic standing in courses in literature, literary criticism, or linguistics.

Roberta McCulloch Scholarships in English

Founded by the late Andrew McCulloch, M.A., of Thorold. The scholarships are awarded as follows: 1. awarded annually on the basis of the work of the second year; to qualify, the student must have completed at least 3.0 credits in English by the end of the second year; 2. awarded to a candidate entering the first medical year for proficiency in university work in English prior to entering medical school. 3. awarded annually to the student with the second-highest standing entering the fourth year of an Honours program with a concentration in English.

McIver Scholarship in English

Founded by J. B. McIver, formerly Treasurer of Queen's University. Awarded annually to the student with the second-highest standing at the end of the first year that intends to take a program with a concentration in English. The student must be registered in at least 3.0 credits in English in the first and second years.

The Mary Mewkill Memorial Scholarship in English 

Established in 1951 by Miss Mary Mewkill of Poughkeepsie, New York, in grateful remembrance of her teachers and associates at Queen's University. Last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest academic standing in English literature courses covering the period from 1780 to 1830 offered by the Department of English Language and Literature. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Roscoe R. Miller Scholarship in English

Awarded to a student entering the third or fourth year of an honours program in English who has achieved high standing in the preceding year in the courses of the program concentration.

Maureen Morgan English Scholarship

Established in May 2010 by the Estate of Maureen Morgan, B.A. (Hons) 1959, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the highest achieving students entering third year in the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Orr-Fry Prize in English

Founded by the Reverend Robert George Fry, a graduate of Arts '21, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student in a 100 level English courses.

Pearl Payne Book Prize

Given by Pearl Payne Tackaberry who graduated with honours in English and History in 1911. Awarded to a deserving student registered in honours English and History.

James A. Roy Memorial Scholarship in English

Established in May 1975 by colleagues, friends, and former students of the late Professor James A. Roy, professor of English at Queen's University from 1920 to 1950. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest standing in one or more courses in Modern British, Commonwealth, or Canadian literature entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of English Language and Literature. If the preceding conditions cannot be met, the scholarship may be awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of English Language and Literature. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Laura Shibley Scholarship

Founded by the late Edith Marion Carey of New Westminster, British Columbia. Awarded annually to a female student entering the final year of a program in honours English who has shown imagination in the writing of English prose composition.

Professor Leopold Havelock Thorburn Memorial Scholarship

Established in November 1973 in memory of Leopold Havelock Thorburn, BA 1944 (Queen's), MA 1964 (Cambridge) by his sister Miss Barbara E. Thorburn and last revised in November 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of English Language and Literature.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Alice Pierce Waddington Scholarship in English

Provision for this scholarship was made in the will of Alice Pierce Waddington, B.A. '10. Awarded annually on the basis of the work of the second year; to qualify the student must have completed at least 3.0 credits in English by the end of the second year and be proceeding to the third year of a concentration in English. Under the terms of the will the following standards must be taken into account in making the award: scholastic ability and attainment, integrity of character and purpose.

Lila Wilson Scholarship in English

Provision for this scholarship was made in the will of Mrs. Lila Wilson of Ottawa. Awarded annually to the student with the highest standing at the end of the first year that intends to take a program with a concentration in English. The student must be registered in at least 3.0 credits in English in the first and second years.

A. Charles Baillie Environmental Studies Scholarship

Established in December 2008 by current and former members of the Board of Trustees and University Council together with friends of Chancellor Emeritus A. Charles Baillie and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering fourth year of any undergraduate degree program in the School of Environmental Studies. Preference will be given to students pursuing research in arctic or environmental research. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Environmental Studies Scholarship

Established by the School of Environmental Studies from donations and school funds and awarded on the recommendation of the School to a student admitted to Honours in the Environmental Studies program exhibiting academic distinction.

Kathleen McSweeney Memorial Scholarship

Established in November 2005 by her many alumni friends in memory of Kathy McSweeney, B.A. 1973, a beloved graduate in Film Studies. Awarded on the basis of high academic standing to a student or students registered in the final year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) major, medial, or special field concentration in a Film Studies program. Selection will be made by the Department of Film Studies and approved by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee.

Susan Near Prize in Film

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Awarded by recommendation of the Department on the basis of the highest standing in film courses at the end of the second year.

Andre Bieler Prize

Established by the friends and students of Emeritus Professor Andre Bieler in recognition of his work as the Resident Artist of Queen's University from 1936 to 1963, and as Director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre from 1957 to 1963. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department to a student deemed to have achieved the highest performance in studio work.

Margaret Craig Scholarship in Fine Art

Established in November 1999 by the Estate of Margaret O. Craig, BA 1947, and last revised in January 2020.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) degree. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

William Mitchell Silliman Scholarship

Established in February 1983 by the estate of William Mitchell Silliman and last revised in February 2022. W. Hugo Evans Book Prize in French

Established in honour of W. Hugo Evans, Head of the French Department from 1948 to 1970, a book prize to be awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in Honours French.

Edgar Forrester Prize in Oral French

Founded by the late Edgar Forrester, Esq. Awarded to the undergraduate student, without previous background in French, achieving the highest standing in FREN 016*.

Wallace Near Prizes in French

Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq., of Toronto. They are awarded as follows: 1) to the student who has the highest standing in FREN 110; 2) to the student with the highest standing at the end of the second year of a B.A.(Honours) program with medial or major concentration in French; 3) to the student with the highest standing at the end of the second year of a major, medial or Language and Linguistics (concentration in French) program; 4) awarded to the student admitted to an honours program in French on the basis of academic excellence, having completed the third year of the major, medial, or special field concentration (Canadian Studies or Language and Linguistics). Established in memory of Barbara Cynthia Pearson. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of French Studies to a graduating student in the Major, Medial, or Language and Linguistics Program (Concentration: French) on the basis of academic proficiency and interest in campus activities.

Deans of Women Memorial Scholarship

Established to honour former Deans of Women by the Committee on Women's Affairs of the Queen's Alumni Association and funded by donations and proceeds from the sale of the book "Their Leaven of Influence: The Deans of Women at Queen's University 1916-1996.” Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students in the fourth year in the Department of Gender Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee based on the nomination from the Department of Gender Studies.

Kathleen A. Herman Prize in Gender Studies

Established by friends, colleagues, and former students to honour Kathleen Herman for her wisdom, determination, perseverance and the leading role she has played in the struggle for advancing the status of women at Queen's. Awarded each year to the student in any program who submits the best essay in one of the courses in Gender Studies. Instructors will submit essays to an adjudicating committee selected by the Head of Gender Studies.

Canadian Association of Geographers Prize

Awarded annually by the Canadian Association of Geographers to the student who is judged at the end of the fourth year in honours to have the most outstanding record; the student must have completed at least seven courses numbered 100 or above in geography.

Mabel Evelyn Fells Scholarship in Geography

Established in June 2014 by the estate of Mabel Evelyn Fells, B.A. 1935, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering third year of a Geography (GPHY) Plan in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Roscoe R. Miller Prize in Geography

To be awarded to a student in the fourth year of honours Geography who achieves highest standing in the courses in the final year of the program concentration.

Richard I. Ruggles Scholarship in Geography

Established in April 1988 by colleagues, students and friends, in honour of Dr. Richard Ruggles, founder and first Head of the Department, leading scholar in the field of historical cartography and respected teacher of geography. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan in Geography who has made an outstanding contribution to the activities of the Department of Geography and Planning. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee. 

Julian Szeicz Memorial Prize

Established by friends, colleagues, and students of Julian Szeicz, internationally respected biogeographer and award winning teacher, who was tragically killed doing fieldwork in 1998. Awarded annually to a graduating honours student in Geography, on the basis of academic excellence, who has applied to a graduate program in a field of environmental studies for the following academic session.

Manley B. Baker Scholarship in Geology

Established in 1934 by the Estate of Agnes Moreland Baker and last revised in January 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan in Geology, or a Bachelor of Applied Science in Geological Engineering. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Leonard G. Berry Memorial Award

Established by the family, colleagues, friends, and former students of the late Professor Leonard G. Berry, professor of mineralogy of Queen's University from 1944 to 1980, as a tribute to his outstanding contribution to mineralogical science and his devotion as a teacher. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Geological Sciences to a third- or fourth-year undergraduate student with a strong academic record and a demonstrated interest in mineralogy. To be eligible, the student must be enrolled in an honours B.Sc. program with a concentration in Geological Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science, or in Geological Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

J. Allan Donaldson Prize in Geology

Established by J. Allan Donaldson, B.Sc. 1956, and awarded to a student entering the fourth year in either an Honours B.Sc. program in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a concentration in Geological Sciences or in the Geological Engineering program in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. If there are no eligible recipients the award can be given to a student entering third year. The recipient of the award will have demonstrated an involvement and ongoing interest in the broad area of Precambrian geology, as demonstrated by coursework and/or summer field employment. The recipient will be chosen by the Head of the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, in consultation with the Chairs of Arts and Science Geology and Applied Science Geological Engineering

Endeavour Silver Corp. Scholarship

Established in January 2012 by Endeavour Silver Corp. and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering the third or fourth year of the Geological Sciences program in the Faculty of Arts and Science, or the Geological Engineering program in Smith Engineering.  Selection will be made by the Undergraduate Scholarship Committee in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering. Value: $5,000.

J. E. Hawley Memorial Scholarship in Geological Sciences

Established by Alban H. Norton, P.Eng B.A. (Hons.) '36, in memory of J.E. Hawley, former Head of the Department of Geological Sciences. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student registered in the second year of either the Geological Engineering program in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science or an Honours B.Sc. program in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a concentration in Geological Sciences. The candidate will be nominated by the Head of the Department of Geological Sciences.

T. Kurtis Kyser Memorial Scholarship

Established in October 2021 by colleagues, family and friends to celebrate the memory of the late Dr. T. Kurtis Kyser. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in geochemistry course(s) to students entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in Geology.  Preference will be given to students pursuing undergraduate research in Geochemistry and enrolled in the fourth-year thesis course. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Committee. 

Thayer Lindsley Book Prize

Established in memory of Thayer Lindsley and awarded to the graduating student in Geological Engineering in Smith Engineering, or Geological Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science, who has contributed the most to his or her year as judged by staff and students in the Department of Geological Sciences.

William Leonard McNeil Scholarship

Established in January 2009 by the Estate of William Leonard McNeil (BA 1949), the top student in Geographics in the autumn of 1948. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the first-year student with the highest standing in a 100 level undergraduate Geology course taken in the fall term. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Susan Near Prize in Geology

Awarded to the student with the highest average in the equivalent of two full third or fourth year courses in the geological sciences, these two to include GEOL 300* and GEOL 321*.

P. E. Newbury Prize in Geological Sciences

Established by the late Mrs. Peggy Ethel Newbury. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of Geological Sciences for outstanding achievement in geological fieldwork, with at least second-class standing in the previous year's academic work.

Major James H. Rattray Scholarship in Geological Sciences or Geological Engineering

Founded by Major J.H. Rattray. Open to students in Geological Engineering in Smith Engineering or Geological Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science on the basis of standing in economic geology, and tenable by a student registered for graduate work in Geological Sciences at Queen's University the following year. In any year in which there is no suitable candidate, it may be awarded at the discretion of the Awards Committee, either as a prize in the fourth year or as a scholarship in the third year, to be held by a student whose program includes economic geology in the following year. Aptitude as well as standing will be considered.

Carl Reinhardt Scholarship

To be awarded annually to a deserving student who enrolls in a second-year program leading to an honours B.Sc. degree with a concentration in Geological Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science, or who registers in the second year of the BASc.(Geological Engineering) program in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

William E. White Scholarship in Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering

Established by a bequest from the estate of William E. White, B.A. (1929), B.A. (Hons) 1930, and medalist in Geology. Awarded to students in the second year, or students entering third or fourth year of a program leading to a B.Sc. degree with a concentration in Geological Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science or a BASc. degree in Geological Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Awards are based on academic achievement and contribution to the Department as judged by the Head of the Department in consultation with the Department’s teaching staff. Awards to second-year students are made in January based on performance in GEOL 211* or 221*, and in GEOL 232*. Awards to third- and fourth-year students are made in the spring.

Morley E. Wilson Scholarship in Geological Sciences

Established in December 1975 by the estate of Morley E. Wilson and last revised in October 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) or a Bachelor of Applied Science degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering.  Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee. 

Elizabeth and Hilda Laird Scholarship in German

Established in November 1986 by Elizabeth B. Laird (BA 1936, BLS (Toronto)) in memory of her cousin, Hilda C. Laird (BA 1918, BLS (Pratt), PhD (Cornell)), who was Head of the Department of German at Queen's University from 1947 to 1962. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in German Studies offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Hilda C. Laird Prize in German

Established in April 1962 by former associates and students to honour Professor Hilda C. Laird upon the occasion of her retirement, as an expression of gratitude and affection. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Herbert F. Malcolm Award

Established by his son, John Malcolm, Arts 1953, in memory of Herbert F. Malcolm, B.Theol. 1926, and who registered with the Arts and Science class in 1925. Awarded annually to the student who has the most outstanding performance in second-year German courses. The standing will be determined by averaging the marks obtained in two courses.

Susan Near Prize in German

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in any 6.0 units in GRMN at the 400-level.

Jean Shields Sanders Scholarship in German

Wallace Near Prizes in German

Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq., of Toronto. Awarded to the students who obtain the highest and second-highest standing in 6.0 units in GRMN at the 300-level. The standing will be determined by averaging the marks obtained in two 3.0 unit courses.

1909 Arts Scholarship in History

Established in September 2007 by Marilyn Hayhoe (House), B.Ed. 1969, to honour the memory of James Henry Bocking, B.A.(Hons) 1936, M.A. 1938, for his distinguished secondary school teaching career in History at Walkerville Collegiate Institute, Ottawa Technical High School and at Fisher Park High School (Ottawa). Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third or fourth year enrolled in either a major concentration in History or a special field concentration in Canadian Studies (primary concentration in history) in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Preference will be given to a student who is studying British or Canadian History.

Catherine Brown Scholarship in History

Established in December 1994 by family, friends, alumni, and colleagues in memory of Catherine Brown, PhD 1979, and last revised in January 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of History. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Helena M. Child Prize in English History

Established by Arthur J.E. Child in memory of his mother, Helena M. Child. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the department to a high-achieving graduating student with a medial or major concentration in History. Preference will be given to a student who has completed at least 2.0 credits at the 200 level or above in the history of the British Isles.

Kathryn Dawson Scholarship

Established from the estate of Dorothy Louise Bishop in memory of Kathryn Dawson, B.A.(Hons.) 1940, Chief Librarian of the Bank of Canada and awarded to a student entering the final year of a B.A.(Hons.) program in History, with preference to a female student.

David Alexander Ekdahl Prize in History

Established in May 1978 by family and friends in memory of David Alexander Ekdahl (Arts 1974, Law 1978) and last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in HIST 121 if offered or two of HIST 106, HIST 110 or HIST 111 to students entering any year of any undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Frederick W. Gibson Prize in Canadian History

Established by colleagues, students, and family of Professor Frederick W. Gibson who taught in the Department of History of Queen’s University from 1952 to 1985. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department to the graduating student with a medial or major concentration in History who has the highest average standing in three courses in Canadian history including two courses at the 300 or 400 level.

Michael R. G. Harris Memorial Prize in Naval and Military History

Established by his parents in memory of Michael R.G. Harris. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of History to the student who, in the course of the regular seminar work during the year, writes the best essay on a topic in naval or military history.

Andrew Haydon Prize in Colonial History

Founded by Senator Andrew Haydon, M.A. 1893, LL.B. Awarded to the student with the highest standing in a History course at the 200 level and above.

Arthur M. Keppel-Jones Essay Prize

Established in memory of Professor Arthur M. Keppel-Jones, a caring teacher, humane and generous scholar, and distinguished historian of South Africa. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of History to a student in a history course who is judged to have written a historical essay of particular literary excellence.

Arthur and Evelyn Lower Scholarships

Established in memory of Arthur R.M. Lower, C.C., M.A. (Toronto), Ph.D. (Harvard), and his wife Evelyn by the estate of Professor Lower. One of Canada’s most eminent historians, Dr. Lower was for many years Professor of History at Queen’s. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to four students entering the final year of an honours program in History whose principal study at Queen’s University is Canadian history or a fairly closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates intending to enter the teaching profession in Canadian schools, colleges, or universities. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee on the basis of a recommendation by the Department of History.

Alexander MacLachlan Peace Prize

Established by the MacLachlan family in memory of Alexander MacLachlan, former President of International College, Smyrna, who throughout his life worked for a better understanding among nations. Awarded annually to the student making the highest standing in a history course pertaining to Canadian politics or Canadian foreign relations.

W. B. Munro Scholarship in History

Established in 1957 by the Class of Arts 1896 in memory of Dr. W.B. Munro and last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of History. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Sarah Murray Scholarship

Established in February 1996 by the Women's Canadian Historical Society of Toronto to recognize the contribution of the late Sarah Murray (BA (Hons) 1924) for her work in the society as a member and as president from 1974 to 1980. Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a full-time student entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of History. Awarded to the student with the highest standing and who has completed or is currently enrolled in at least three courses in Canadian History, of which two are at the 300 or 400 level. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Susan Near Prizes in History

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Three prizes of equal value awarded to students who, intending to concentrate in history, obtain the highest standing in history at the end of the first, second, and third years, respectively, and have not won an award of higher value in history.

Grattan O'Leary Prize in Canadian History

Awarded annually to the student achieving the highest standing in a 300- or 400-level course in Canadian political history.

John Sherwood Memorial Prize

Established by former students with additional contributions from colleagues and friends in memory of Professor John Sherwood who taught in the Department of History from 1964 to 1986. Awarded annually to the best graduating student with a medial or major concentration in History who has completed at least three courses in the history of continental Europe since 1800, including two at the 300 or 400 level.

Osborne Studd Book Prize in History

Established by the Department of History and by friends and relatives in memory of Osborne L. Studd, B.A. '79. Awarded annually to the student deemed to have the highest standing in a course in medieval history.

Alice Pierce Waddington Scholarship in History

Provision for this scholarship was made in the will of Alice Pierce Waddington, B.A. '10. Awarded annually on the basis of the work of the second year; to qualify the student must have completed at least four courses in history by the end of the second year. Under the terms of the will the following standards must be taken into account in making the award: scholastic ability and attainment, integrity of character and purpose.

Thomas M. Walsh, M. A., Memorial Prize in History

Established by W.G. McNeil, B.A. '13 and J.F.C. Whalley, B.A. '13 in memory of their classmate Thomas M. Walsh, M.A. '13. Awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in the history courses of a program leading to an honours B.A. in History. In determining the award, essays that have been prescribed during the session will be taken into account.

Harry Abramsky Prize in Hebrew

Established in 1951 by Mr. Harry Abramsky, and revised in May 2015. Awarded to a student who obtains high standing in HEBR 191. Selection will be made by the Arts and Science Awards Committee.

Alfred Bader Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Established in October 1982 by Alfred R. Bader, Science 1945, PhD (Harvard), and last revised in October 2019. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in a Jewish Studies cognate course to students in any undergraduate degree program.

Naim S. Mahlab Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Established in April 2006 by Naim S. Mahlab, B.Com. 1949, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering the third or fourth year of a Jewish Studies degree program who have the highest grades in Jewish Studies courses and cognate courses as determined by the department. At the discretion of the department, students entering second year may be considered.

CSEP/SCPE Undergraduate Student Award

Awarded by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology to a graduating student who has achieved highest academic standing in the scientific portion of the physical and health education curriculum.

Reuben Wells Leonard Scholarship

Two awards are made as follows: 1) one scholarship is awarded annually to the student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program in the School of Kinesiology and Health with the highest standing; 2) one scholarship is awarded annually to the student entering the third year of the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program in the School of Kinesiology and Health with the highest standing.

PHE 1975 Scholarship

Established in November 1989 by the Class of PHE 1975 and last revised in November 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Kinesiology. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Ron Stewart Physical Education Prize

Established by associates and friends of Ron Stewart, B.A.- B.P.H.E. '57, who during his undergraduate years at Queen's was three times voted the most valuable player of the Senior Intercollegiate Football Team by his teammates. Awarded annually to the student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program who has exhibited a high level of performance, leadership, and sportsmanship in athletic endeavours.

Abramsky Prize in Physiology

Established in April 1976 by Harry Abramsky and revised in February 2015. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in second and third year Physiology courses to a student entering the fourth year of an honours Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science upon the recommendation of the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences.

Francis H. Milazzo Prize in Microbiology and Immunology

Established in memory of Francis Henry Milazzo, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Queen's from 1960 until his death in 1989. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in course work in Microbiology and Immunology to a student graduating with an honours Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Physiology Bursary

Established in May 2001 by donations to the Department of Physiology. Awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of an honours Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

R. E. Semple Award in Physiology

Established in February 1980 and revised in May 2015 by family, colleagues, friends, and former students of Robert E. Semple, Professor of Physiology at Queen's from 1953 to 1978. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in Physiology to the student completing the fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Life Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Nan Skelding Scholarship

Established by Nan Skelding and awarded to a student enrolled in the final year of the B.Sc. Honours subject of specialization Life Sciences program on the basis of high academic standing in the basic medical science core courses in the previous years.

This is one of three prizes founded by graduates of the University in honour of the late Professor N.F. Dupuis on the completion of 45 years of service as a professor in the University. Awarded to the student who makes the highest standing in MATH 120 in the April examinations.

Dr. George L. Edgett Memorial Scholarship in Statistics

Established by former friends and colleagues in memory of George Edgett who began the teaching of statistics at Queen's University in 1933. Awarded in the fall to the student registered in the fourth year of an honours program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who has the highest weighted average in the courses STAT 268*, 269*, 353*, 361*, and 363*. The award will be given to a qualified honours statistics student if one exists, and otherwise awarded to a qualified honours mathematics student.

Wm. Roy Hardick Scholarship

Established in October 2001 by Ester Hardick in memory of her husband, Wm. Roy Hardick (BA 1933, MA 1934). Last revised in (SCSSA month/year). Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of any undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Dora and Beatrice Helmkay Scholarship in Mathematics

Established in March 1985 by Iva Beatrice Alder (BA 1918) in honour of her and her twin sister, Dora Steed (BA 1918). Last revised in February 2023. Tom R. Higgins Scholarship in Mathematics and Statistics

Established in March 2008 and last revised in January 2018 by Thomas (Tom) Higgins, B.Sc. (Hons.) 1979. Awarded to students entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) or a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program who are enrolled in a Major, Medial, or Specialization degree plan in Mathematics or Statistics at Queen's University. The Ralph and Nellie Jeffery Scholarship

Albert Harold Lightstone Scholarship

Founded in memory of Professor A.H. Lightstone. Awarded to the student entering the fourth year of an honours program with a major concentration in Mathematics or Statistics having the second-highest standing in the mathematics and statistics courses of the first three years and an overall average of 80 per cent or better.

The Annie Bentley Lillie Scholarship in Mathematics

Established in May 1996 by J. Ashton Lillie in memory of his wife, Annie Bentley Lillie, and last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a Bachelor of Science (Honours), or a Bachelor of Applied Science degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Irene MacRae Mathematics & Statistics Scholarship

Established in April 1986 by Margaret Crain in memory of Irene MacAllister MacRae, Arts 1914, who was vice-president of the Mathematical Club while at Queen's. Last revised in October 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan in Mathematics or Statistics. Edna McGill Scholarship

Established in memory of Mrs. Edna McGill Hambly. Last revised in October 2021. Founded in memory of E.D. Merkley, B.A., a graduate of 1926. Awarded each year to the student obtaining the highest standing in MATH 121; book prize.

Susan Near Prizes in Mathematics

Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. They are awarded as follows: 1) two prizes awarded to the students with the highest and second highest standing in MATH 110 and 120 taken concurrently; 2) two prizes awarded to the students who at the end of their second year have the highest and second-highest standing in MATH 280*/281* and three half courses chosen from MATH 210* or 312*, 231*, STAT 268* and 269* taken concurrently.

Hugh Rose Scholarship in Mathematics

Established in March 2018 by the Estate of Mary Margaret Rose and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students enrolled in second year of an honours degree program in Mathematics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Nan Skelding Scholarship

Established in February 2004 by a bequest from the estate of Nan Skelding and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to female students entering third year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. If, in any given year, the funds cannot be disbursed, the scholarship may be granted to female students in third year of a Science concentration in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Marion and Arthur Wonnacott Scholarship

Established in September 2008 from the Estate of Marion Wonnacott and Arthur Wonnacott, BA 1934 and last revised in January 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Harold Arthur Cohen Book Prize in Music

Established by the family in memory of Harold Arthur Cohen, B.A. 1928, B.Sc. Eng. Physics 1930. Awarded to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Music program, who shows great promise and exceptional ability to communicate the beauty of music through either performance or teaching potential.

Concerto/Aria Competition Kingston Symphony Prize

Established in April 2004 and awarded annually to the best performer in the Finals of the Concerto/Aria Competition. The prize is a performance as an invited guest soloist with the Kingston Symphony Association. The decision is made by the Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Music Director of the KSA. Repertoire to be performed with the KSA is to be mutually agreed upon with the winner and the KSA's Music Director. The prize may not be awarded each year.

Concerto/Aria Competition Queen's Symphony Prize

Established in April 2004. Should the Concerto/Aria Competition Kingston Symphony Prize not be awarded, then the best performer in the competition will receive the Queen's Symphony Prize. The prize is a performance as an invited guest soloist with the Queen's Symphony Orchestra. The decision is made by the Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Conductor of the QSO. Repertoire to be performed with the Queen's Symphony is to be mutually agreed upon with the winner and the Conductor of the QSO. The prize may not be awarded each year.

Arthur L. Davies Scholarship in Music

Established by the family and friends of Arthur L. Davies. Awarded to the student in the Bachelor of Music program who is deemed by the Dan School of Drama and Music to have demonstrated exceptional ability in musical performance.

Maurice Dubin Memorial Prize in Composition

Established in memory of Maurice Dubin, a well-known Kingston musician until his death in 1983. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of Music to a third- or fourth-year student demonstrating exceptional ability and achievement in composition.

Graham George Memorial Prize in Composition

Established by Bachelor of Music Alumni from 1973 to 1977 and by faculty in the School of Music, in memory of Dr. Graham George, the first Head of the Department of Music (1968-1971), prominent professor of composition, respected scholar and performer, director of the Choral Ensemble in its early years, and teacher at Queen's University between 1946 and 1977. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student who has demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in music composition. Preference will be given to a graduating student.

Kingston Symphony Association Scholarship in Music

Five scholarships which include the James Rini Memorial Scholarship and the Helen Lucile Allan Memorial Scholarship are provided annually by the Kingston Symphony Association for award to full-time students in the B.Mus. program whose major instrument is an orchestral one. The scholarships are awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music on basis of a competitive audition and satisfactory academic standing. Preference is given to candidates whose major instrument is one of those in which a vacancy exists in the Kingston Symphony Orchestra at the time of audition. While the award of a scholarship does not automatically entitle the recipient to a position in the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, acceptance of a scholarship constitutes an obligation on the part of the recipient to become a member of the Kingston Symphony Orchestra for the entire academic year of the scholarship should he or she be invited to do so in writing within three weeks of the award of the scholarship. In such cases the scholar will receive the normal local player’s fee for services.

Christopher Lewis Prize in Music

Established by Marsha and Dr. Spruce Riordon in recognition of the outstanding academic achievements and far-reaching scholarly influence of their brother and brother-in-law, Christopher Lewis (Ph.D. Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester), renowned music theorist and gifted teacher until his untimely death in 1992. Awarded annually to a student in the third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Music program or the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program in Music for the best research paper in music theory or musicology.

Jennifer Maginnis Memorial Scholarship for Woodwinds

Established by the B.Mus. class of 1985 in memory of Jennifer Maginnis, a B.Mus. student at the time of her death. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student who is enrolled in the B.Mus. program and is majoring in a woodwind instrument.

George N. Maybee Memorial Scholarship in Music

Margaret E. M. McLellan Memorial Scholarship

Established in November 2000 by family and friends in memory of Professor Margaret E.M. McLellan, Associate of the Royal College of Music, Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music, who taught in the School of Music at Queen’s University for twenty-five years. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student in the Bachelor of Music program, whose major instrument is piano, and whose concentration is collaborative piano or piano performance. Preference will be given to students entering the second, third, or fourth year of the program.

Lynn Anne Milsom Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends in memory of Lynn Anne Milsom, B.Mus. '88, a graduate student in Performance at Boston University at the time of her death. Awarded on the basis of competitive audition to a student entering the second, third, or fourth year of the B.Mus. program who is deemed by the Dan School of Drama and Music to have demonstrated exceptional ability in the area of performance on a woodwind instrument.

Carlos & Catherine Prado Chamber Music Prize

Established in October 2010 by Catherine and Carlos G. Prado, Ph.D. 1970, and other friends and alumni of the School of Music in recognition of the importance of excellence in chamber music. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to the student chamber music ensemble deemed to have presented the best performance during the preceding academic year.

William Mitchell Silliman Scholarship

Raymond H. and Phyllis J. Smart Scholarship in Music

Established in January 2010 by a bequest from the Estate of Phyllis J. Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education

Established by Don Wright to strengthen instrumental music in schools. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student in the Bachelor of Music program who has demonstrated talent and achievement in practical instrumental arrangement and orchestration with particular reference to music education.

Don Wright Scholarship in Vocal and Choral Music

Established by Don Wright with the aim of strengthening the teaching of vocal and choral music in the schools, especially in Grades 5 to 9. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student in the Bachelor of Music program who has demonstrated a special aptitude for vocal and choral music with particular reference to music education.

Pall Ardal Moral Philosophy Prize

Awarded annually to the student in the second-year Moral Philosophy course (currently Philosophy 257) who is deemed by the Department to be the most deserving, provided he or she has first-class standing in the course. The prize is a medal struck in honour of Professor Pall Ardal, whose teaching in Philosophy 257 is remembered by generations of students. Professor Ardal was a full-time member of the Philosophy Department at Queen's for twenty years (1969-1989).

Epistemology and Metaphysics Book Prize

Established by the Department of Philosophy and awarded annually to the student in the upper-year epistemology and metaphysics course (currently PHIL 250) who is deemed by the Department of Philosophy to be the most deserving, provided he or she has first-class standing in the course.

Marilynne Charters Fuller Scholarship

Established by the estate of Mary Francis Fuller, B.A. 1947, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Preference will be given to students enrolled in an Honours Plan in Philosophy.

John Stark Gillies Philosophy Book Prize

Awarded annually to the best student in each 100-level course in philosophy given intramurally during the regular session, provided that the student obtains first-class standing in the course. No prize will be awarded to a student who is taking such a course as a second course in philosophy, nor may a student who is taking two such courses simultaneously win prizes in both.

History of Philosophy Book Prize

Established by the Department of Philosophy and awarded annually to the student in the upper-year history of philosophy course (currently PHIL 228 or 232) who is deemed by the Department of Philosophy to be the most deserving, provided he or she has first-class standing in the course.

Logic Book Prize

Established by the Department of Philosophy and awarded annually to the student in the upper-year logic course (currently PHIL 361) who is deemed by the Department of Philosophy to be the most deserving, provided he or she has first-class standing in the course.

Jaganathan Muraleenathan Book Prize in Philosophy

Established in April 2002 by Dr. J.M. Nathan in memory of his father and awarded annually to a graduating student who is determined by the Department of Philosophy to have the highest first-class standing upon completion of an honours program in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a concentration in Philosophy.

Philosophical Perspectives Book Prize

Established by the Department of Philosophy and awarded annually to the student in the upper-year philosophical perspectives course (currently PHIL 399) who is deemed by the Department of Philosophy to be the most deserving, provided he or she has first-class standing in the course.

J.J. Russell Memorial Scholarship in Philosophy

Established in July 1976 by friends and colleagues in memory of Joseph J. Russell, Professor of Philosophy until his death in 1975. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the Department of Philosophy. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

William Coombs Baker Memorial Scholarship

Established in May 1939 by alumni, staff, and students in memory of Professor William Coombs Baker and last revised in January 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with an academic plan in Physics. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Harold M. Cave Scholarship in Experimental Physics

Established in memory of Harold M. Cave, M.A. (Queen's), Ph.D. (Cantab), who taught in the Physics Department from 1930 until years after his retirement in 1967. Two scholarships are awarded annually to students with first-class standing, one entering the third year leading to a BASc. degree in Engineering Physics and one entering the third year of a B.Sc. (Honours) program in Arts and Science with a concentration in Physics. The awards will be based on achievement in experimental work as judged by the Department of Physics.

Christopher Petrie Memorial Prize in Physics

Awarded to a student in either of the Faculties of Arts and Science or Applied Science who has obtained a first-class standing in a third-year laboratory course in experimental physics and who, in the opinion of the Department, shows the most promise of future achievement in experimental physics.

Queen's C.A.P. Prize Examination Award

Established in April 2008 by the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy, and awarded annually to students based on their academic performance in the nationwide Canadian Association of Physicists University Prize Examination. Awarded to first and second ranked students in each of second, third, and fourth year of undergraduate studies in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy. Selection of award recipients will be based on the recommendation of the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy.

Carl Reinhardt Scholarship in Physics

To be awarded annually on the basis of standing at the end of the third year to a student registered in the fourth year of an honours B.Sc. program with concentration in Physics or a BASc. in Engineering Physics who does not already hold an award of higher value.

Denys T. Roberts Prize

Established by the family, colleagues and former students of Denys T. Roberts, Professor of Physics from 1947 to 1979. Awarded annually to the student in the honours Bachelor of Science program with the highest standing in PHYS 107.

Chancellor C. A. Dunning Scholarship in Political Studies

Awarded by recommendation of the Department of Political Studies to a major or medial student in Political Studies who achieves the highest standing in third year.

Two prizes, founded by the late W.W. Qaid-i-Azam Prize in Political Studies

Established by the Embassy of Pakistan and named in memory of the founder of the state of Pakistan. Awarded to the student who is deemed by the Department to have written the best essay on Pakistan for a course relating to Comparative Politics.

John Rae Prize in Political Studies

Established in October 2001 by an anonymous donor in honor of John Rae, B.A. (Hons.) 1967 (Political Studies), who, in addition to his continuing contributions to Canadian Political life, became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Queen's University in 2000. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a full-time student in the second, third, or fourth year of the Political Studies program in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Adam Shortt Scholarship in Political Studies

Established in May 1969 by Gershom W. Mason, in honour of Dr. Adam Shortt, formerly professor of Political and Economic Science. Last revised in October 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Political Studies. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Ann Adamson Scholarship in Psychology #1

Established by family, colleagues, former students, and friends of William Robert Thompson, Professor of Psychology at Queen's from 1966 to 1979, Head of Department from 1966 to 1972. Awarded to the student completing the fourth year of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Bachelor of Science (Honours) program with a major in Psychology who is judged by the Department of Psychology to have submitted the most outstanding honours thesis in PSYC 500. The names of all winners are engraved on a plaque which is retained in the Psychology Department; book prize.

Harold Arthur Cohen Book Prize in Religious Studies

Established by the family in memory of Harold Arthur Cohen, B.A. 1928, B.Sc. Eng. Physics 1930, and awarded to the student entering fourth year in a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program in Religious Studies who shows promise in applying his or her knowledge of comparative religious ethics to current social or political issues.

Danny Norman Blythe Scholarship

Established in 1990 in memory of Danny Norman Blythe, B.A. (Honours) '85, by his parents, Norman and Hazel Blythe, his uncle and aunt, Joe and Thelma McKeown, his cousins, Doug and Brenda Werden (McKeown), B.A.(Honours) '76, and his Godson Dustyn Werden. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department to an outstanding student entering the final year of an Honours program in Sociology with preference given to those who have taken courses in criminology.

Jennie S. Cramm Scholarship

Established in March 1970, by the Estate of Jennie Shibley Cramm and last revised in May 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Sociology. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

W. H. Cramm Scholarship

Established in March 1970, by the Estate of Jennie Shibley Cramm and last revised in May 2020. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the Department of Sociology. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

John R. Houston Memorial Book Prize

Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Sociology to a graduating student in the B.A. (Honours) program in Sociology at Queen's University who has achieved high grades and has demonstrated general intellectual proficiency and is proceeding to a graduate degree program at any university.

Garton Memorial Graduating Prize in Spanish

Established in October 1979 by Clare John Garton and Miriam Garton in memory of their daughter, Marilyn Eva Garton (BA (Hons) 1971, MA, BEd 1973). Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest standing graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree program with an academic plan in Hispanic Studies or Spanish and Latin American Studies offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

Garton Memorial Prize in Spanish 

Established in October 1979 by Clare John Garton and Miriam Garton in memory of their daughter, Marilyn Eva Garton (BA (Hons) 1971, MA, BEd 1973). Last revised in February 2023. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the student with the highest standing in an undergraduate course or courses in Peninsular Spanish Literature. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Harry W. Hilborn Memorial Prize in Spanish

Established by colleagues, friends and former students of Harry W. Hilborn, Professor of Spanish at Queen's from 1950 to 1970. Awarded to the student with a concentration in Spanish who has high standing in a course or a combination of courses at the 300 or 400 level in Spanish (excluding SPAN 301* and 302*) provided that such standing is first-class.

Loretta Johnson Scholarships in Spanish

Established by Eleanor Smith in honour of Mrs. Loretta Johnson, a former lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Italian, who retired in 1991 after 40 years of service. There are two scholarships to be awarded: one in SPAN 010* and one in SPAN 101 or SPAN 112* to the student who has the highest standing, provided the student has an A standing and is proceeding to further studies in Spanish at Queen's in the following session.

Alvera Salute Lundquist Memorial Scholarships in Italian

Established by the late Alvera Salute Lundquist and awarded on the basis of academic excellence as follows: 1) to the student who has achieved the highest standing in ITLN 331 or 332; 2) to the student who has achieved the highest standing in ITLN 205 and is proceeding to further studies in Italian at Queen’s University in the following session; 3) to the student who has achieved the highest standing in an ITLN course at the 300-level.
